WO: Weekly Obsessions

Happy New Year! At what point is it no longer a “new year”? I hadn’t officially said it to you all … but isn’t it a little late to be wishing you well? Can you ever have enough well wishes? These are the things running through my mind at odd hours in the night. And here’s what else I can’t stop thinking about:

  1. Photo Doggies for Anthony: Have you seen a ton of cute pet pics all over your FB feed? This viral event has more than a million people supporting a young boy’s desire to see doggy photos between his leukemia treatments. The power of social media can be used for good! Who knew?
  2. Florida Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage: In other breaking news, Florida is finally on the front page for something positive! As of yesterday, the sunshine state has lifted its ban on same-sex marriage — and millions can rejoice in the legal recognition that love is love.
  3. Kurios: Cirque du Soleil: I had the pleasure of enjoying my first-ever Cirque show last night with this new-to-the-U.S. production. Breathtaking, dazzling, simply stunning … there aren’t enough amazing adjectives to describe what we saw.
  4. “Uptown Funk” –Mark Ronson f. Bruno Mars: I can’t think of a song in recent history that gets people moving as much as this one. It’s so incredibly catchy, with a crazy hook and contagious lyrics. Here’s hoping this dream duo continue to collaborate!

WO: Weekly Obsessions

The holiday season has been all hustle and bustle, so it’s been really nice to spend the last few days catching up with family and honoring our traditions.

From celebrating family mass to opening just one present (our ornaments), it’s these small comforts from home that fill my heart and make me so happy to be surrounded by loved ones.

Wishing you and yours a blessed holiday season, and hope you’re able to spend time with those you hold dear!

WO: Weekly Obsessions

I have to keep this week’s obsessions rather short and sweet — because I’m on vacation and refuse to spend any more time online than necessary.

  1. (and 2, 3 and 4) FLORIDA LOVE: I’m in Florida for a dear friend’s wedding, and the festivities begin with tonight’s Bachelorette Party. Tomorrow, we’ll lounge by the pool, and then Friday will be the big day! I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate Jamie and Chris, and I’ll get some QT in with the family. Win-win-win.

Since I’m kinda leaving you guys hanging, here’s one of my favorite songs that always reminds me of home. Enjoy 🙂

First World Problems

It’s time for the next installment of this series, wherein I complain about first world problems — AKA things I should be grateful I have access to but annoy me anyway.

Today’s topic: Fantasy Football.

You may recall my announcement last year, just before Team Honey Boo Boo careened off the tracks into a fury of fantasy football failure.

I have an even bigger problem this year, though. I don’t have a league.

It’s been brought to my attention that my former commish is not interested in taking money from people who no longer live in Florida.

Excuse me — rather, he’s only allowing ONE person from out of state to play and the rest of us are left leagueless.

I know what a pain it is to have people Skype in and draft.
I get it. Really, I do.
Prove it, you say?
Because I sat through it last year for ONE person.

My issue is: If they’re letting that same ONE person draft from afar, then what’s the big deal with having a few more do it? Hell, put my team on Autodraft (it’ll probably be better for us all that way).

But don’t take it away for people who pay up (on time, mind you) each season.

Apparently, leaving Floriduh is FROWNED UPON IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT!*

If you’re expecting some sort of social commentary on the Trayvon Martin case, you’re in the wrong place. All I will publicly say about it is that I’m not a lawyer and my home state of Florida sure knows how to make a scene. What I’m happy to share, instead, are these four feel-good finds:

  1.  Baby Fever: Real tweet from yours truly — “Everyone’s off getting engaged, married or pregnant and I’m over here like: Which bars can we get kicked out of tonight? In all seriousness, I get to celebrate the upcoming arrival of two babies this week*: My boss’s and my sister-in-law’s! Bring on the goofy games and endless desserts 🙂
  2. Ice Pops: I like to kick it old school from time to time, particularly when I’m waiting for A/C to be installed and dying a slow death. Enter your favorite childhood treat, and all is well … until you cut your mouth, of course. Sweet victory.
  3. MLB All-Star Week 2013: This year’s celebration is in good ol’ NYC, causing a flurry of tourists and events to my new home. The Home Run Derby offered plenty of entertainment, but I could have done without the parade. Morning reroutes and being trapped in the office for lunch were not so fun.
  4. “Enter Sandman” – Metallica: The best reliever in the history of baseball was part of his final All-Star team, helping to secure a win for the American League. This hardcore hit is the future first ballot Hall of Famer’s entrance song — a perfect fit for this badass and All-Star Game MVP.

*I hear there’s a royal baby on the way, but I’m just not interested. Kid probably will have a normal name and definitely won’t be as sassy as Suri.

WO: Weekly Obsessions

Anyone else exhausted from this election hub-bub? I’m sure mine has nothing to do with the late-night partying we did for Brother’s fiancée last weekend, or my growing excitement for their marriage to begin this Saturday … surely. Let’s get to it, shall we?

  1. Lisa Frank Pic ‘N Share: Remember how awesome your Trapper Keeper was all covered in Lisa Frank stickers? Well, now you can jazz up your photos with sparkly bears and unicorns! It’s a clunky app, but I love it all the same. Thanks to my friend, Sarah, for the find.
  2. “Top Chef Seattle”:  The 10th season of this award-winning cooking competition promises to be a great one. I met Top Chef Master Art Smith last weekend, and we gabbed about its return — we’re basically besties now.
  3. The Election Is Over: Flori-duh is a disaster, the country is divided and every thought to enter the public’s mind is published on social media. Nothing there has changed, though it needs to if we’re ever going to progress as a country.
  4. Movember: It’s that time of year when the menfolk grow their facial hair in a sign of solidarity to support men’s health issues. Donate to the cause, and stay tuned here for more mo’ updates.

I feel the same way, Abigael.

Witty in Fitty: Florida Prepares for a Hurricane

Hurricane Isaac has come and gone through Florida in a matter of days, leaving a wave of destruction status updates and, if you’re lucky enough, a day off from work. Here’s hoping the other states are just as prepared.

Oh, Tampa.

It’s serious.

Sad, but true.
