Witty Rewind: June 2019

I thought it’d be fun to capture each month’s activities and milestones in a series called Witty Rewind. It may not be for posterity’s sake, but I hope you’ll enjoy looking back at the previous month with me.

I spent the bulk of June cheering on my brother’s fitness progress and not doing a whole lot toward my own. I’ve fallen out of routines, de-prioritized healthy habits, and generally made excuses for my lack of motivation. For the first time probably ever, though, I’m not completely beating myself up for it. [Negative thoughts squashed: ~20]

While I still have a hard time abandoning books I don’t love, I did evolve a bit into trying shorter stories and more memoirs. I did my best to like some titles, but there were only a few standouts from the nine I consumed in June. [Books read: 9]

Weather be damned, here’s the rest of my June un-gloomed:

  1. Finished a Vegas trip with CHRISTINA AGUILERA and her first residency show
  2. Fought yet another mystery illness, perhaps my body’s way of saying “slow the F down”
  3. Celebrated a dear couple’s wedding and toasted with their champagne burro
  4. Made new friends via an Airbnb stay at said wedding weekend
  5. Caught up with former colleagues at a happy hour where pigeons shat on us
  6. Mourned the loss of the Warriors in Game 6
  7. Co-hosted a beach bonfire with s’mores on s’mores on s’mores
  8. Celebrated a friend’s birthday with putt-putt and got the only Hole in One on the 18th hole!
  9. Remembered Dad during a quiet, reflective Father’s Day
  10. Volunteered with kinders and then veterans for my company’s month of service program
  11. Attended Book Club, having not read the book for probably the first time ever
  12. Continued the tradition of seeing the “Sex and the City Live!” drag show at Oasis
  13. Celebrated my second mom’s birthday with bocce, barbecue, and beers
  14. Did some self-care work in the form of nails did, hair did, everything did
  15. Virtually celebrated my niece’s third birthday and sparkly cowgirl costume

WO: Weekly Obsessions

Today was my last day with my former company, which was bittersweet to say the least. I learned so much and had the opportunity to work with some of the smartest, most talented people I’ve ever met. On Monday, I join Sutter Health, which will bring its own set of nerves and opportunities. Color me excited!

  1. Friends with Benedicts: Who doesn’t love a themed brunch? This pop-up has a few locations in SF, and I’ve now enjoyed their “Fight Club” and “Dad Jokes” menus. What I’m most pumped for, though? The “Game of Thrones” menu debuts this Sunday and runs through August — get your goblet and armor ready.
  2. Palmer’s Tavern: I’ve walked past this place approximately a hundred times but finally had plans to visit last night, for my sorority alumnae group’s monthly happy hour. Their mocktail was amazing, the brussels sprouts appetizer was delish and the people-watching was perfect. I’ll definitely be putting it into my regular rotation.
  3. Dumpling Time: Clearly, I’ve been on a food tour of SF lately… This delightful spot opened up near my former office a few weeks ago, and I managed to get a taste before leaving the area. It’s like dim sum on speed, with an incredible array of options — each one tastier than the next. We enjoyed every single thing we ordered, which speaks for itself.
  4. “Galway Girl” – Ed Sheeran: This tune has entered my ear waves more and more the past few weeks, and I’m not mad about it. My affection for Ed Sheeran is no match for Val’s from GBBO, but I absolutely adored Galway during my study abroad to Ireland and can’t help but smile each time I hear this one.

I’m low on sleep but high on energy to bring you all this week’s finds. Here’s hoping I don’t crash before I finish…

  1. La Croix Cocktails: I previously mentioned my love for La Croix flavored sparkling water. Well, I’m hopelessly addicted now that I have an endless supply at work. Good thing a writer at Gizmodo curated nine cocktail recipes to make with La Croix! Happy hour just got a little happier.
  2. RunKeeper: With my newfound Run Club at work, I wanted to try this wildly popular app to map my route and pace. The welcome series of emails was a little aggressive, but I’m otherwise pleased with the experience so far. Bonus: It’s on sale for just $20/year — get it while you can!
  3. Firefly: I recently celebrated three months with my company by joining my referring co-worker and our mutual friend at this spot in Noe Valley. It’s largely veg-focused, but I can attest that the fried chicken and biscuit were also stellar. It was a nice departure from my usual menu, especially with the tart and vibrant fried green tomatoes. Yum!
  4. Jay Pharaoh: SNL’s king of impressions has done it again — this time, mimicking various rappers. Best of all, host and musical guest Drake had something to say about it. Despite the crap quality (thanks for hoarding your videos, SNL), you won’t be disappointed, fam.*

*Am I using that correctly? I’m too old and white to be cool.

Today is the best day.

It doesn’t matter that my foot was smashed on the train. Or that a guy I was connecting with on Tinder turned out to be a creep (shocking!). Or that I had five hours of meetings.

Today is the best day, because I’m going to my first Yankees game of the season! They’ve played two without me, and I’m experiencing my first case of FOMO. Well, fear no more. Today is the best day.

  1. The Hudson Bond: Before the game, I’m hitting a quick work happy hour at this midtown spot. The weather is finally breaking, and we’ll be able to enjoy its patio even more in the coming months.
  2. Yankees Home Games: The smell, the sounds, the sights — I’m clearly more than excited for my first visit back to the Bronx since September.
  3. Brother Jimmy’s BBQ: Once inside, I have to hit up this chain’s amazing concession stand. I’ve been dreaming of the fried pickles for months, I tell you!
  4. “The Boys Are Back in Town” – Thin Lizzy: Well, duh. It’s no coincidence that this monster ballad has played on loop in my head all day. Let’s get ‘em, Yanks!

Weekend Recap

I’m generally not one to brag, but I have to say: My weekend was just plain awesome. It feels like I’m hitting my stride in my new city, and I couldn’t be happier with the experiences and memories I’m gaining.

Friday: SA-KE-BOMB!

  • All You Can Eat Sushi + Sake @ Chinatown East – sushi was delicious, but the unlimited sake bombs reeeally got the night going
  • One and One – a new favorite spot, it’s chill upstairs and a thumping club downstairs
  • Dancing at Pianos – worth the $5 cover to go upstairs for better music and quicker service
  • We hit another bar after that, but I don’t remember the name (sign of a good time)

Saturday: Low-Key Lounging

  • Slept in for the first time in weeks and accomplished nothing – oddly OK with this
  • Wharf in Murray Hill – visited our friend who works there for pre-gaming
  • Brooklyn house party – celebrated friends who graduated from hair school, law school, design school and another who passed the NY State Bar

Sunday: Fun-Filled Finale

  • Boozy brunch at The Guilty Goose in Chelsea – very strong mimosas alongside eggs benedict with a jalapeño hollandaise
  • Stopped in to see Heroes & Villains at FIT – fascinating facts featured in fun and interesting exhibits
  • Made our way home to watch SNL – Kristen Wiig’s return to the stage at 30 Rock did not disappoint
  • Phone date with Magz – because she should be celebrated every day for what she put up with from us

Though it went by way too quickly, I had an absolute blast throughout this weekend. I can’t wait to enjoy more of this improved weather and share my finds with you guys. Cheers!
