WO: Weekly Obsessions

The SF Bay Area has been battered with rain the last few weeks, and while it’s needed to overcome years of drought, it’s also really cramping my style. Much like in Florida, residents here seem to know nothing of umbrella etiquette, driving precautions or general how to handle this moisture falling from the sky.

I thought back to a post from what feels like a lifetime ago, in October 2011. It’s my Playlist for a Rainy Day, and tbh, it hasn’t changed all that much.  I still crave brooding tones, somber lyrics and disconnecting from the outside world.

How do you handle endless rainy days? (I’m looking at you, Seattle readers!)

First things first: San Francisco had a massive gas leak explosion and fire today. Thankfully, I was far away and there are no reports of injuries, but the destroyed businesses and homes won’t be easily replaced. I had a much different intro planned, but this obviously takes precedence.

  1. The Saddle Rack: A dear friend hosted her birthday celebration at this Fremont institution last weekend, and it did not disappoint. Turns out I have zero future in a country line dancing career, but the endless plaid, jeans, boots, hats and entertainment made up for my failure. I look forward to our next rodeo there soon!
  2. Holiday Inn Express: What made our journey to The Saddle Rack most memorable was the nearby Holiday Inn Express and its fantastic amenities. Free shuttle rides to and from the venue, plus a FREAKING PANCAKE MACHINE for the continental breakfast = color me impressed. I have no doubt we’ll be back again.
  3. Tesla Model 3: I know, I’m officially an SF resident. My good friend offered her chauffeur services in this zippy little number. There are a million little thoughtful touches and fun features, and the ride is about as smooth as you can imagine. I won’t be getting one for myself anytime soon, but a girl can dream.
  4. “Good as Hell” – Lizzo: You know those songs that just make you want to get up and dance? This jam is that times a million. I can’t hear it without putting my sassiest, boppiest, most fun-loving face on. Even when it’s cold and rainy or it’s been a terrible day, Lizzo gets me out of that funk.

If you’re a word nerd like me, there’s no doubt you’ll love these finds:

  1. “Turtles All the Way Down” – John Green: As you can imagine, I had plenty of reading material to get through during 11+ hours of flights last week. Bestselling author John Green does it again with this intriguing and unabashed introspection of mental health, adolescence and family bonds.
  2. “Money Diaries” – Lindsey Stanberry: You already know I love Refinery29’s Money Diaries so it’s no wonder I was full-on pumped for this compilation of firsthand stories and financial advice. From paying off loans to buying a home, it’s a must-have for making cents of complicated topics. You’re welcome.
  3. “We Are Never Meeting in Real Life” – Samantha Irby: The always hilarious Irby does it again with this array of personal essays. It’s completely normal to burst out laughing in the middle of an airport, right? Nothing to see here, just pure enjoyment and entertainment from these ridiculous real-life stories.
  4. “2002” – Anne-Marie: If you listened to the radio 16 years ago, I can guarantee you’ll love this ode to throwback tunes. From Nelly to *NSYNC and everything in between, Anne-Marie has you covered.

WO: Weekly Obsessions

I’m currently shrouded in a fuzzy blanket with the lights off, earplugs in and a throbbing head. While my summer cold finally seems to have subsided, I have one mother of a migraine that’s making me see spots.

So in the interest of not making myself any more miserable, here’s a bop I had on repeat before today’s turbulence. Here’s hoping you find it just as obsession-worthy:

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday weekend ahead. Have fun, be safe and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do (on social media)!

Am I still blowing out birthday candles? Yes. Am I mad about it? No.

  1. The Never-Ending Birthday: Yes, it’s been seven days since my birthday and YES, I am with you, hating on people who are still setting off fireworks. But I’ve been quite surprised to enjoy so many celebrations, from a pinata at work to a park picnic to a delicious dinner and more. I’m feeling the love, folks!
  2. SFPL Is #1: You may recall my infatuation with the library and this article cements why the San Francisco Public Library is truly top-notch. From engaging programs to redefining the role of librarians, it’s clear the SFPL is #1 in our hearts and the Dewey Decimal System. (Don’t @ me for a DDS joke, y’all.)
  3. “52 Lists for Happiness”: This weekly journal has made the rounds on plenty of gift-giving lists and must-have articles. It was gifted to me last year, and while I wasn’t diligently sticking to the habit (and am therefore, not done), I can honestly say it’s given me a healthy and helpful way to document the things I’m proud of. Plus, it’s preeetty.
  4. All Drake Everythang: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about Drake’s latest record-breaking album “Scorpion” and mega collaborations. Just look at the Billboard Hot 100 — he’s on 13 of the top 21! If that doesn’t scream “Success!” I don’t know what does.

I acknowledge time flying by nearly every week here, but I just have to say, I was asked about my plans for the fall today and nearly had a full-blown meltdown. I understand June is creeping around the corner but THE FALL? Please, don’t make me think that far. I can barely plan my next hour.

  1. Overdrive: An added benefit to voraciously reading Refinery 29’s Monday Diaries is that I often learn about apps and services to make life easier. It’s how I heard of this app, and “obsessed” is an understatement. Simply log in with your library card and gain instant access to thousands of options. It’s my first actual foray into e-reading, but I’m beyond excited to dig into more books than ever before.
  2. MealPal: While I’d heard of MealPal while living in NYC, I hadn’t researched or revisited it since moving here. Then I read yet another R29 MD and, well, now I’m its newest member who’s enjoying $6 lunches (instead of $20 salads). Want a promo code? Sign up here.
  3. Half-Price Mondays: Memorial Day was the perfect backdrop to join some girlfriends from Tampa at the A’s/Rays game. And wouldn’t you know it? The Treehouse — a beautiful, shiny stadium spot with a full bar and games — offers half-price drinks on Mondays. No mustache required, and  it almost made a 13-inning game painless.
  4. “This Is America” – Childish Gambino: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely already heard and watched this. Breaking news reporting over here, I know. But I haven’t covered it yet with WOs AND Cardi B brought it top of mind with her *shocking* discovery that Donald Glover and Childish Gambino are the same person. Pssst … the video is NSFW, in case you haven’t heard.

WO: Weekly Obsessions

It feels more common than ever where the week gets away from me and before I know it, a month or more has passed in the blink of an eye. It’s a good problem to have, overall, but I often find myself rushing from one thing to the next, rarely stopping to pause or reflect on what the heck I’ve done.

This week is no exception, as I’ve had a particularly packed few days and the most intense are yet to come. In the spirit of keeping a 350+ week streak going, though, here’s the earworm on repeat in this constant chaos of mine.

Until next week…
