WO: Weekly Obsessions

Today is the best day.

It doesn’t matter that my foot was smashed on the train. Or that a guy I was connecting with on Tinder turned out to be a creep (shocking!). Or that I had five hours of meetings.

Today is the best day, because I’m going to my first Yankees game of the season! They’ve played two without me, and I’m experiencing my first case of FOMO. Well, fear no more. Today is the best day.

  1. The Hudson Bond: Before the game, I’m hitting a quick work happy hour at this midtown spot. The weather is finally breaking, and we’ll be able to enjoy its patio even more in the coming months.
  2. Yankees Home Games: The smell, the sounds, the sights — I’m clearly more than excited for my first visit back to the Bronx since September.
  3. Brother Jimmy’s BBQ: Once inside, I have to hit up this chain’s amazing concession stand. I’ve been dreaming of the fried pickles for months, I tell you!
  4. “The Boys Are Back in Town” – Thin Lizzy: Well, duh. It’s no coincidence that this monster ballad has played on loop in my head all day. Let’s get ‘em, Yanks!

Weekend Recap

It appears I’ve fallen even deeper in love with New York than I’d realized. Ain’t that the way it goes? I sure hope my main squeeze will continue to love me back.

This sums it up pretty well.

Summer Fridays Begin!

  • Celebrated with a LOT of rounds at 169 Bar – the $3 popcorn snack is kind of a rip-off, but it’ll do when you’re drinking bourbon lemonades for eight hours
  • Walked to Fontana’s – ordered pizza while attempting to watch the Pacers-Heat game … everyone expects the Floridian to root for LeBron, but I was too busy checking out Dwyane Wade

Seen it with my own eyes.

Saturday Soccer … at a Baseball Stadium

  • Scored free tickets to see Manchester City vs. Chelsea at Yankee Stadium
  • Walked over to The Dugout while the crowds cleared out
  • Took our large and in charge group to Swig in the Upper East Side – new favorite for the Irish staff
  • Hit Wharf in Murray Hill again, because we love our friend who works there
  • Ended the night at Company, a bar I don’t generally enjoy but put up with anyway

When Brunch Becomes Last Call

  • Boozy brunch at The Sunburnt Cow – one of NYC’s Top 10 according to the Google, but service could have used some help. Food was pretty good, but “bottomless” is relative to waiting 40 minutes for a refill #firstworldproblems
  • Visited our other friend for the end of her shift at The Flying Puck
  • Walked about 40 blocks to East Village superstar Off the Wagon
  • Hit Fiddlesticks for another round of shots
  • Pizza pit stop for our friend – no need for me to eat when I had two eggs six hours prior
  • Managed to get over to Good Company in Billyburg at 9 p.m. and stayed till last call

You really can’t complain with a view like that.

Monday Funday

  • Finally, the sun showed up! So we laid out at Central Park, in a spot called Sheep’s Meadow (not “Sheet Meadow” like I thought I overheard)
  • Out to Bushwick for our friends’ BBQ

… And I lived through all of that to tell the tale! What are the best summertime spots in your city?

WO: Weekly Obsessions

This week’s obsessions are all specifically selected to honor one of the best cities in the world — and one I’ll soon call “home.”

That’s right, dear readers: I’ve accepted a job offer in NEW YORK CITY! The champagne is poured and the mittens are purchased … let’s keep the party going.

  1. Central Park: Is there anything more beautiful than a snow-capped Central Park? I’m sure the novelty will wear off when I’m shivering in my boots, but for now, just look how preeetty.
  2. Yankee Stadium: Um, duh. It’s the offseason, so they have a few months to prepare for my arrival. But you bet your pinstripes I’ll be there as often as I can. Mrs. Cano, anyone?
  3. Rockefeller Center: It’s the 80th anniversary of this majestic holiday tradition at Rock Center. Ice skating, hot chocolate and a larger-than-life tree? Don’t mind if I do.
  4. “New York, New York” – Frank Sinatra: Might as well go full-force with my NY mania, right? Iconic singer, legendary song, and it’s played after every Yankee win at home — perfection.

The coming weeks will be filled with excitement and anxiety, but I’m incredibly thankful for the blessings I’ve been granted. Hope you’re each having a wonderful week and celebrating your good fortunes too.
